Buying a New Car, or a used car? Part 2

In this post, I will be writing about either choosing a brand new car, a car that's between 3-5years old or a car that is 5 years or older. There are major pros and cons to these.

If you have followed me back in 2011, I've wrote about this before. Please click the below links :

Buying a New Car, Turno or N/A Part 2

NOW, many car owners bear the mentality of having a proper maintenance free schedule if they buy a brand new car. Little did they know..........that most new cars aren't really problem free, really.

Please view the below graph (I almost resorted to drawing one with my hand as it took me quite some time to get one made out of Excel):

The above graph shows what people think. As cars gets older they face more problem, and brand new cars are totally PROBLEM FREE. MY opinion? Not true.

Now, this is a graph of my own. Now hey, new cars come with warranty too with various number of years provided by your car manufacturer.

What you see is that a car faces quite a number of problems when it is brand new, possibly from manufacturer's defects such as problems with brake rotors, seatbelts, torn seats, driveshafts, engine problems, etc. The Preve for example. There are also cases of shot transmissions, shot TCUs, water entering headlamps, etc.

When a car is 3 to 5 years ideally, it is usually problem free. Sorry guys, the top graph 3-5 should be straight. Too lazy to get it ammended. As you touch the 5-6year point, wear and tear starts playing its role.. ranging from rubber parts, suspension parts and also the entire ride gets harsher over time.

Apart from that, cars depreciate in market value highly in its initial years, so... choose wisely. You get to enjoy the new feel and smell of a new car, or you can just settle for something less than so-called perfection.

As for old cars facing more and more problems; it may be worthwhile keeping if it holds you any sentimental value or if it is one of those lifetime cars such as the Nissan Sunny 130Y or the Mercedes W124 Masterpiece.

A lot of things can be written but I rather not, as I do not want to cause any drama or debates.

Cheers,

Elton
