Side-gapped plugs REVIEWED

I have been running on a set of platinums for about 40k km on the Perdana, that's ever since I got the car. Thinking "Hhmm... maybe I should get a new set of platinums. Oh wait... I saw Skywalker's thread on Zerotohundred 5-6years ago on DIY side-gapped plugs for sale.

Back then I didn't have much cash and I wasn't earning much money to get myself one of this and couldn't afford trial and error and brushed aside the idea of purchasing one for the Charade. Throughout the past three years, I've been sticking to Denso Iridiums for the Charade as I wasn't able to use normal plugs due to spark blowout.

For those of you who's not heard of the term blowout before :

Sparks gets extinguished even before it could reach the ground electrode. Extinguished by what? By high boost :). Small gaps may or may not help, but you will experience popping and misfiring on certain range of RPM, I can't quite remember low or high. Need to do some brain storming on this.



I ordered a set of plugs from Lau Kah Chai (Skywalker on zth forum) and it arrived two days later :

 -Notice the electrode being filed off so that the edge of it goes towards the side of the lead.









Side view of it. I observed that there were no super sharp edges on the cut side of the electrode. No preignitions for sure.

After Installation

I started the car and it seemed that the car fired up a split second faster than when it had the old platinums in. I revved the engine when the car was stationary, revs seem to climb up faster. Similar to how a car reacts after remapping.

Okay, now's the driving part. On first gear, the car seems to pull harder. The pull was more noticeable, on top of the manual conversion and torque of a 2.0L engine. At least, you stick to the seat a little harder laaaaaa. Turbo drivers, hmph. I can't quite feel the second and third gear pull, probably because my boot was loaded with a 40kg subwoofer and shitloads of consumable stock for business. On top of that, probably another 50kg worth of soundproofing and 17" rims.

However, upon reaching top speed, it was, again noticeable. Effort on 4th gear to reach my cruising speed was less. I could bring the car up to 20-30km/h faster than the car could go compared to last time.

Knowing that I have got an expensive taste, to buy Iridiums and what not, this is a good deal for n/a cars who want slight improvement. Haven't put one of these in a turbo yet. Let's see how long this one will last.
